2027 Polls: INEC Braces for 100m Voters, Launches Real-Time Readiness Tracker

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stepped up preparations for the 2027 general elections with the deployment of a real-time monitoring system as Nigeria’s voter register approaches 100 million.

The new system is designed to give INEC headquarters live updates on the preparedness of its offices across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, enabling the commission to identify and tackle operational problems before they disrupt the elections.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos at the opening of a two-day Strategic Operational Workshop for the commission’s Administrative Secretaries.

He said the commission was introducing an Administrative Secretary Master Operational Tracker Template, a data-driven tool that would provide real-time information on the state of preparations across INEC offices nationwide.

The tracker will be connected to INEC’s Election Monitoring and Support Centre, allowing the commission to monitor key areas such as electoral logistics, distribution of materials and training of election personnel.

Amupitan said the initiative was part of efforts to make election management more proactive, stressing that problems should be identified and resolved before they become crises.

He charged Administrative Secretaries to take ownership of preparations in their respective states, describing them as the “engine room” of INEC’s operations at the state level.

The INEC chairman also warned that administrative indiscipline and political interference could undermine the credibility of the elections.

“If you tolerate shortcuts, shortcuts will multiply. If you tolerate political interference, neutrality will deteriorate,” he said.

Amupitan further directed officials to draw lessons from recent off-cycle elections, particularly the Osun State election, and convert the experience into national standards ahead of 2027.

The commission’s operational priorities will cover five major areas.

The first is voter registration and Permanent Voter Card distribution, with the national voter register expected to approach the 100 million mark.

INEC will also intensify monitoring of election logistics and sensitive materials, including their receipt, auditing, storage and deployment.

Electoral technology will be another major focus, with the commission strengthening the capacity of its personnel to manage the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, INEC Results Viewing Portal and Candidate Registration and Results Management System.

Attention will equally be given to human resources, particularly the recruitment, vetting and technology training of ad-hoc personnel.

The fifth area is financial compliance, including workflow automation and strict adherence to procurement procedures.

The latest preparations come as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify across the country.

INEC’s timetable provides for the publication of the final register of voters on January 11, 2027, while the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16.

Campaign activities are expected to end on February 18, with a possible presidential run-off scheduled for February 28.

Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6.

The commission’s new tracking system is expected to provide INEC with a centralised picture of its preparedness, allowing gaps in logistics, personnel, technology and other critical areas to be detected and addressed ahead of election day.
