National Diaspora Day 2026 to Deliver Quality Health Services Across Nigeria
The National Identity Development Commission (NIIDCOM) has announced that this year’s National Diaspora Day will focus on bringing quality healthcare to communities across Nigeria. The theme for 2026 is “Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development.”
The initiative, supported by the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative 2026 (DHII 2026) and in collaboration with national health institutions, will see Nigerian medical professionals from the diaspora provide interventions in six regions of the country from July 20, culminating in a grand finale on July 25–26 in Abuja.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NIIDCOM, emphasized that the program leverages the expertise, innovation, and global experience of Nigerian health professionals abroad to strengthen local health systems and expand specialist care access, especially in underserved communities.
The DHII 2026 initiative will cover all six geopolitical zones, including North East, North West, North Central, South East, South South, and South West. Beyond the over $20 billion in annual remittances from the diaspora, Dabiri-Erewa highlighted that Nigerian professionals contribute through knowledge transfer, mentorship, and advisory support to the nation’s healthcare system.
Seven major diaspora medical associations have been assigned to specific states:
Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA – USA): Imo, Abia, Enugu
Canadian Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists (CANPAD – Canada): FCT, Abuja
Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG – UK): Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto
Concerned Medics Foundation (UK): Borno
Nigerian Medical Association Germany: FCT and Nasarawa (Keffi)
Nigerian-Australian Medical and Dental Association (NAMDA – Australia): Bayelsa, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers
Nigerian Doctors Forum South Africa (NDF-SA): Lagos
The outreach will provide specialist clinical services, maternal and neonatal healthcare, sickle cell screening, women’s health, interventional radiology, neurosurgery, echocardiography, point-of-care ultrasound, and medical leadership training. The program emphasizes sustainable capacity building and hands-on mentorship.
The initiative will officially launch in Abuja at the start of Diaspora Week 2026, after which teams will deploy nationwide. Participating associations will reconvene in Abuja on July 24 to submit outcome reports and impact data, feeding into policy discussions during National Diaspora Day on July 25.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support of diaspora engagement as a pillar of national development, and acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of Health, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziac Adekunle Salako, state governments, professional bodies, development partners, and the media.
She urged Nigerian health professionals in the diaspora to continue collaborating with the government to build resilient, equitable, and people-centered healthcare systems nationwide.
