President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a 50 percent discount on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) as part of measures to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, with the discount set to take effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, to Monday, June 1, 2026, covering major travel routes across the country.

According to the directive, the initiative is aimed at cushioning the financial burden of inter-city travel as thousands of Nigerians are expected to move across states to celebrate the Islamic festival with family and loved ones.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration said the intervention reflects its commitment to easing economic pressures on citizens, particularly during festive periods marked by high travel demand.

The discount will apply to all services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, including standard passenger routes across the Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna, and Warri-Itakpe corridors.

Officials noted that arrangements have been put in place to manage increased passenger turnout and ensure safety, orderliness, and efficient ticketing during the period.

The Eid-el-Kabir celebration remains one of the busiest travel seasons in Nigeria, often characterized by increased demand for road and rail transport. The government has repeatedly used transport subsidies and fare reductions in previous years to support mobility during major holidays.
