FCT Launches Two-Week Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination Campaign for Dogs, Cats

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Department of Veterinary Services has commenced a two-week free anti-rabies vaccination campaign for dogs and cats across the six Area Councils of the territory.

The campaign, which runs from September 1 to 14, 2026, is aimed at protecting pets, preventing the spread of rabies and safeguarding residents from the potentially fatal disease.

According to the department, the vaccination exercise is being conducted across Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji Area Councils.

Dog and cat owners in the FCT have been urged to take their pets to designated vaccination centres within their respective Area Councils to benefit from the free vaccination.

The veterinary authorities stressed the importance of rabies prevention, noting that vaccinating pets remains a critical measure in protecting both animals and humans from the disease.

The department called on residents to take advantage of the campaign and ensure that their dogs and cats are vaccinated during the exercise.

The campaign is part of efforts to promote responsible pet ownership and strengthen public health protection through a One Health approach.

The One Health Desk Officer, Dr. Sherifat Balogun-Raji, urged residents to participate in the exercise, emphasising the importance of collective action in making the FCT rabies-free.

“Protect your pets, protect your family and help make the FCT rabies-free,” the department urged.
