Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has inaugurated a new phase of affordable housing projects while launching an artisan skills training programme for 135 youths as part of efforts to expand access to decent homes and promote employment across the state.

The ceremony, held Thursday in Dutse, marked the continuation of the administration’s housing initiative being implemented through the state housing authority.

Speaking at the event, the governor recalled that the programme began nearly two years ago, noting that the foundation stone for the first phase was laid on January 20, 2024. He disclosed that about 1,050 of the targeted 1,500 housing units have already been completed, with a third phase scheduled for launch later this year.

Namadi described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to reposition the Jigawa State Housing Authority into a viable, self-sustaining institution capable of delivering affordable housing to civil servants and the general public. He revealed that the state government had provided an investment fund of ₦2 billion to enable the authority commence the new phase, expressing confidence that strengthening its capacity would accelerate housing delivery across the state.

According to him, the programme aligns with Goal 9 of his administration’s 12-Point Agenda, which focuses on urban infrastructure development, renewal, and expansion of affordable housing.

He commended the Ministry of Lands and the Housing Authority for their roles in the project, noting that the foundation laying of 52 two- and three-bedroom housing units in Dutse represents a significant milestone for the agency.

The governor urged the authority to manage the investment fund transparently and efficiently while ensuring strong returns and faster access to affordable housing. He also encouraged the adoption of public-private partnerships and innovative construction technologies to reduce costs and improve affordability.

Beyond housing, Namadi emphasized youth empowerment through skills acquisition, stating that the artisan training programme will equip participants selected from all 27 local government areas with practical construction skills, promote job creation, and enhance local participation in the building industry.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained investment in housing development, youth empowerment, and sustainable urban growth, after which he formally launched both the training programme and the construction of the 52 housing units.

“These initiatives will play a vital role in advancing our vision for a more prosperous and inclusive Jigawa State,” the governor said.
