Nigerian Army Retires 18 Generals After 35 Years of Service
The Nigerian Army has retired 18 senior officers from the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport following the completion of 35 years of meritorious service.
The officers, comprising four Major Generals and 14 Brigadier Generals, were formally honoured during a colourful pulling out parade held in Benin City, marking the end of a three day conference of the corps.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Corps Commander, Major General Danjuma Shagaya, described the event as both a celebration and recognition of the retirees’ dedication and contributions to national service.
He noted that the officers had served the nation diligently from the time of their commissioning, adding that the pulling out parade remains a longstanding military tradition used to honour years of sacrifice and commitment.
Shagaya also commended the Chief of Army Staff for acknowledging the contributions of the retired officers by sending a representative to the event.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Major General Olaniyi Dare, said their careers spanned several decades across operational, command and administrative roles within the army.
He emphasised the critical role of the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport in sustaining military operations, noting that the corps ensures that troops deployed in various theatres are adequately supported with logistics.
According to him, whether in training, peace support missions or internal security operations, the corps remained committed to delivering efficient and reliable services.
“As we transition into retirement, we recognise that while we are leaving active service, our commitment to the ideals of the Nigerian Army remains unwavering,” he said.
Dare added that the retirees would continue to serve as ambassadors of the corps and contribute their experience whenever called upon.
He also paid tribute to their families, acknowledging the sacrifices they made in supporting military careers often marked by long separations and frequent relocations.
The ceremony marked the conclusion of a conference themed “Optimising Supply and Transport Capabilities Towards Providing Effective Service Delivery to Nigerian Army Operations in All Missions.”
