Rio Ferdinand Tips Arsenal to Retain Premier League Title: ‘They Play Like Champions’
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed Arsenal to retain the Premier League title, saying Mikel Arteta’s side currently have a level of stability that their major rivals lack.
Ferdinand made the prediction after Arsenal opened their title defence with an impressive 3-0 victory over Coventry City. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former England international praised the Gunners for their disciplined approach and ability to punish mistakes.
“It was what I expected from Arsenal. Solid, hard to play against, shut down the opposition and then fed on some mistakes and punished them. They played like champions,” Ferdinand said.
The former United defender believes Arsenal’s biggest advantage heading into the new campaign is the continuity within the club.
While Arsenal remain under Arteta, several of their major competitors have undergone significant changes. Manchester City have a new manager following Pep Guardiola’s departure, while Liverpool and Chelsea have also entered new managerial eras. Manchester United, meanwhile, remain in a rebuilding phase.
Ferdinand therefore believes Arsenal are better positioned to maintain consistency over the course of a long title race.
“I don’t see anyone being able to challenge Arsenal this season. They’re the only team with stability. Everyone else has had big changes,” he said.
He also highlighted Arteta’s growing experience after leading Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season.
Ferdinand believes the Arsenal manager now understands what it takes to win the league and could become one of the few managers to win consecutive Premier League titles.
“I think this is going to be a period of dominance for Arsenal,” he predicted.
Ferdinand is not alone in his prediction.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville also backed Arsenal to win the title during his analysis of Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Fulham on Monday.
Neville was particularly impressed by Arsenal’s summer recruitment, highlighting the arrivals of Bruno Guimarães, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa.
“One hundred per cent Arsenal,” Neville said when asked who he believes will win the Premier League this season. He added that Arsenal are “way out in front” because of the squad Arteta has assembled.
Arsenal will now look to build on their strong opening performance as the defending champions continue their campaign, with expectations already rising that Arteta’s side could establish a period of dominance in English football.
