Shettima Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Human Rights
Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to promoting human rights and strengthening the implementation of international humanitarian law amid ongoing security challenges.
Speaking at the 2026 High-Level International Humanitarian Law Dialogue in Abuja, Shettima said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is adopting both military and non-military strategies to tackle insecurity while protecting civilian rights.
He noted that recent efforts include the domestication of the Kampala Convention to support internally displaced persons, alongside reforms such as military training on humanitarian law, improved child protection systems, accountability for sexual violence, and integration of humanitarian principles into education.
The Vice President also highlighted Nigeria’s collaboration with global partners, including the United Nations and International Committee of the Red Cross, to strengthen compliance with global standards.
Earlier, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi said ongoing justice reforms and improved correctional systems are aimed at ensuring humane treatment, while efforts are underway to translate humanitarian laws into local languages for wider accessibility.
