A 23-year-old Syrian national with legal residence in Austria was arrested on Saturday after randomly stabbing five passersby in Villach, a city in southern Austria. The attack resulted in the death of a 14-year-old and injured four others.

According to police, the suspect’s motives are still unclear, and they are continuing to search for potential further suspects. A police spokesperson, Rainer Dionisio, praised a 42-year-old man who witnessed the incident and helped to prevent further harm. “He drove toward the suspect and helped to prevent things from getting worse,” Dionisio told Austria’s public broadcaster ORF.

The witness, who works for a food delivery company, intervened by driving his car towards the suspect, thereby helping to subdue him until police arrived. The police are still investigating the incident and are working to determine if the suspect acted alone.
