The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has urged journalists to uphold truth and professionalism as key instruments for national unity and security.

Speaking at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council, Oluyede stressed that Nigeria’s stability depends not only on military efforts but also on responsible reporting.

Represented at the event, the defence chief reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other security threats, noting that the sacrifices of troops have restored normalcy in affected communities.

He said the Easter message of resurrection symbolizes hope and renewal, assuring Nigerians that current challenges are temporary.

Oluyede highlighted the strategic role of the media in national security, urging journalists to prioritize accuracy and avoid reporting that could incite fear or division.

He also called on citizens to support security agencies with timely information and prayers for troops on duty.

Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, emphasized that ethical journalism strengthens democracy, promotes accountability, and fosters social cohesion. He added that an informed citizenry is essential for national development and for holding leaders accountable.

NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, encouraged journalists to draw inspiration from Easter to renew their commitment to truth, integrity, and professional excellence. She also stressed the importance of unity within the union as a tool for advancing journalism and protecting press freedom.

The Easter retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” gathered journalists, security officials, and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility, and the media’s role in national development.
