2027: Tinubu Rejects One-Party State Narrative, Backs Strong Opposition
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed concerns that Nigeria is drifting toward a one party state, insisting that democracy thrives on credible opposition and healthy political competition.
Speaking at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress, Tinubu said his administration welcomes criticism and opposing views as essential tools for refining governance.
“We do not seek a one party state,” the President declared, adding that a vibrant opposition is necessary for national development and effective statecraft.
His remarks come amid growing defections of opposition figures into the APC, fueling speculation about the weakening of rival parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tinubu, however, maintained that the party’s growth reflects Nigerians’ confidence in its leadership and vision, not a deliberate attempt to stifle opposition.
The President also defended the Electoral Act 2026, describing criticisms against it as misplaced and insisting that the law emerged from a transparent legislative process involving public participation.
