Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar to Resign Today, Join Bauchi Governorship Race

By Tope Templer Olaiya | 30 March 2026

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is set to resign today to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State in the 2027 elections, sources have confirmed.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed all ministers and political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down by March 31, 2026, in accordance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and INEC’s timetable for party primaries. Tuggar’s resignation aligns with this directive.

Political insiders say Tuggar’s entry into the race is likely to spark intense interest among stakeholders within Bauchi and beyond, particularly as members of Tinubu’s cabinet have shown hesitation in resigning due to the absence of a formal presidential endorsement. Observers note that the ruling APC’s adoption of consensus over delegates’ primaries adds further complexity to cabinet members’ political calculations.

Tuggar’s public service record includes serving in the House of Representatives for Gamawa Federal Constituency (2007–2011), as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany (2017–2023), and as Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2023. Analysts suggest his technocratic and policy-driven approach may appeal to voters seeking experienced leadership.

A close aide described Tuggar as a formidable contender, saying his profile and integrity could reshape the political landscape in Bauchi, where the 2027 governorship race is increasingly viewed as a pivotal contest.

Supporters of Tuggar from Bauchi, including APC convention delegates, have expressed confidence that his formal declaration is imminent, signaling growing momentum ahead of the election season.

The resignation and gubernatorial bid are expected to influence broader political alignments and governance continuity as Nigeria prepares for the 2026/2027 electoral cycle.
