40 Feared Dead in Gunmen Attacks on Jos Community
More than 40 people are feared dead, with several others injured, following a violent attack by suspected gunmen in Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba, Jos, on Palm Sunday night, March 29, 2026.
The assault, which occurred around 7:50 p.m., plunged the community into chaos as residents fled amid sustained gunfire.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the area, opening fire on unsuspecting residents before fleeing. Security personnel, including the Nigerian Army, reportedly arrived at the scene around 8:45 p.m. to restore order.
On the morning of Monday, March 30, our team counted 26 corpses in Angwan Rukuba alone. Casualty figures from other affected locations are still being confirmed, as some injured residents were taken away during the attack while others were transported to mortuaries.
The situation remains tense, with residents urged to stay vigilant as authorities work to stabilize the community.
In response, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North, effective from midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026, in a bid to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the attack as barbaric and unprovoked, assuring that security agencies are pursuing the perpetrators. Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities by providing information to aid ongoing investigations.
