85-YEAR-OLD DR. CHRISTY AKPUNONU ACHIEVES ACADEMIC DREAM, SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS PHD THESIS

Dr. Christy Akpunonu, an 85-year-old retired journalist, has made history by successfully defending her PhD thesis at the University of Abuja. Her academic journey began after retirement, when she took up a job at a university and was challenged to pursue her PhD.

Despite being close to 80 years old at the time, Dr. Akpunonu refused to let her age be a barrier. Instead, she threw her hat into the ring and worked tirelessly alongside other students to achieve her goal. When asked why she wanted a PhD at her age, she replied, “I wanted a PhD as my crown.”

Today, Dr. Akpunonu’s determination and hard work have paid off, and she can proudly wear her “crown” of a PhD degree. “Her story is one of determination and grace of God,” she said.
