Osun At 35: NUJ Congratulates Citizens, Urges Government To Renew Commitment To Comprehensive Development

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, has congratulated the government and people of the state on the 35th anniversary of its creation, calling on the state government to use the milestone as a springboard for renewed dedication to all-encompassing development.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, and Secretary, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, the union described the anniversary as a significant moment for reflection on Osun’s journey thus far, a time to celebrate its accomplishments and squarely address the challenges that continue to confront the state. Osun State was created on August 27, 1991, from the old Oyo State.

The union acknowledged that over the past three and a half decades, Osun has firmly established itself as a vital component of Nigeria’s political, economic, cultural, and social landscape.

It paid tribute to the state’s rich human capital, deep cultural heritage, significant agricultural potential, and the resilience of its population.

The NUJ specifically commended successive administrations, traditional institutions, public servants, organised labour, civil society groups, business owners, professionals, and all residents whose collective contributions have sustained the state since its inception.

The union also recognised the pivotal role of journalists in the development of Osun. It noted that the media has consistently served as the eyes and ears of the public by reporting on government activities, exposing shortcomings, celebrating achievements, and giving a voice to the citizenry.

The NUJ further paid homage to journalists who have contributed to the state’s history but are no longer alive, describing their dedication and commitment to the profession as an enduring part of Osun’s heritage.

Looking forward, the NUJ called for a stronger, more robust partnership between the government and the media, urging authorities to recognise journalists as indispensable pillars of democracy. The union also appealed to citizens to actively participate in governance, protect public property, reject violence and misinformation, and contribute positively to the development of their communities.

The NUJ statement emphasised that the next 35 years should be about transitioning Osun from potential to prosperity, from promises to measurable outcomes, and from political competition to sustainable development.

The union extended its best wishes to the people of Osun for greater peace, prosperity, unity, inclusive development, and an improved quality of life as the state embarks on another chapter in its history.
