Breaking: NPC Chairman Aminu Wushishi Dies After Brief Illnes

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Wushishi, has died after a brief illness.

Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, in Minna, Niger State, throwing his family, associates and political circles into mourning.

The development reportedly became known in the Niger State capital around the time of the Juma’at prayer.

Wushishi, a former Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State, was said to have taken ill shortly before his death.

His Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, confirmed the development to the media.

“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.

The NPC chairman’s death comes as the commission continues preparations for major population and demographic activities, making his sudden passing a significant development for the agency.

Wushishi was appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and had been overseeing the commission’s responsibilities relating to population data, demographic planning and census administration.
