Mutfwang Bans Hisbah Activities In Plateau, Orders Arrest Of Operatives

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has ordered the immediate suspension of activities of a group reportedly operating as Hisbah in parts of Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

The governor declared the group’s activities illegal and directed security agencies to arrest and investigate anyone found to be involved.

Mutfwang also ordered that persons found culpable after investigation should be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The directive followed reports that the group had been operating in parts of Jos North, allegedly promoting Sharia law and imposing unauthorised rules on residents.

The group was also accused of intimidation, harassment and extortion, as well as attempting to exercise powers not conferred on it by law.

In a statement issued by his office, the governor warned all persons involved in the reported activities to immediately desist or risk arrest and prosecution.

Mutfwang stressed that Plateau State operates within the Nigerian constitutional framework and has only one legally recognised system of law.

He maintained that no individual or group has the authority to assume powers that have not been conferred on it by law.

The governor urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while directing security agencies to take appropriate action to prevent any group from undermining public order or assuming unlawful authority.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to protecting the rights and security of all residents of Plateau State, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

The governor’s directive comes amid concerns over the reported activities of groups seeking to impose rules or exercise enforcement powers outside the established legal framework.
