Emir of Gumel Dies in Egypt After 46-Year Reign

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died in Cairo, Egypt, after a protracted illness. He was the 16th Emir of Gumel and one of Northern Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers.

The Jigawa State Government formally confirmed the monarch’s passing on Thursday, 3rd September 2026. In a statement, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, on behalf of the government, described the death of the monarch as a great loss to his immediate family, the state and the country at large.

“Inna Lillahi Wainna Ilaihin Raji:in. The Jigawa State Government regrets to announce, with profound sorrow, the passing of His Highness, the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani, CON. Born on 12th December, 1942, the revered monarch passed away this afternoon in Cairo, Egypt, after a protracted illness,” the SSG stated.

“Throughout his remarkable reign of 46 years, His Highness Emir Ahmed Muhammad Sani, CON, who ascended the throne in 1980, dedicated his life to the service and betterment of his people.

The 16th Emir of Gumel was a beacon of wisdom, offering invaluable counsel and tirelessly working towards improving health outcomes, increasing school enrolment, and fostering peace and security across the state. His legacy of commitment to progress and community welfare will be deeply missed”.

The SSG added that the government extends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Gumel Emirate, the State’s Council of Chiefs, and all citizens of Jigawa State during this period of immense grief.

Details regarding the funeral arrangements will be announced by the Emir’s palace and communicated to the public in due course.

Born on 12th December, 1942, the late Emir ascended the throne on 16th December, 1980, following the death of his father, Alhaji Muhammad Sani, and received his staff of office in May 1981 from the then Governor of old Kano State, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi. He left behind three wives and thirty children.

Before becoming Emir, Alhaji Sani II had a distinguished career in public service. He worked with the Gumel Native Authority and the Immigration Department and served as Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture in old Kano State, where he established Triumph Newspaper and CTV 67.

He later proceeded to Ohio University, Athens, in the United States, where he studied Political Science and International Relations, graduating in 1978.

During his more than 45 years on the throne, the late Emir was known as a peacebuilder, a champion of education and cultural preservation, and was instrumental in bringing several developmental projects to Gumel, including the College of Education, Gumel, and the Maigatari Free Trade Zone.

He was honoured with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, in recognition of his immense contributions to national unity and development.

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, also announced the monarch’s death in a condolence message issued on Thursday.

Pantami described the late monarch as a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom and a father to all, saying he devoted his reign to the service of his people, promotion of peace and education, and preservation of cultural values.

On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and good people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation, Pantami stated.

Pantami prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.

Governor Umar Namadi also mourned the death of the Emir, describing his demise as a monumental loss to the Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State and the nation.

The late Emir was a highly respected traditional ruler who dedicated 45 years of his life to the service of his people, promoting peace, education, and development in Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State at large, the SSG said on behalf of the Governor.

The Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum also mourned the Emir, describing his death as a significant loss to the North and Nigeria.
