Former Super Eagles Striker Michael Eneramo Slumps and Dies on Pitch During Friendly Match in Kaduna

The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo, who collapsed during a friendly match in Kaduna State on Friday morning and was later pronounced dead. He was 40 years old.

Eneramo was participating in a local friendly game at a primary school pitch in the Ungwan Yelwa area of Kaduna when the tragic incident occurred. According to multiple sources, the former international had played the entire first half without showing any signs of distress. However, approximately five minutes into the second half, he suddenly collapsed on the pitch without any contact from another player, causing panic among teammates and spectators .

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. A source present at the scene told news outlets, “He slumped and died right on the spot. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the hospital” . Early reports indicate that Eneramo may have suffered a cardiac arrest .

The Nigeria Football Federation has since confirmed the tragic news. In a statement, the NFF expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, said, “This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment. I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss” .

The official Super Eagles handle on X also mourned the former striker, posting his picture with the caption, “Rest in peace Michael” .

Born on November 26, 1985, in Kaduna, Michael Eneramo enjoyed a successful professional career that took him across Africa and Europe . He began his career with Nigerian club Lobi Stars in 2004 before securing a move to Tunisian giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis during the 2006-2007 season . It was at Esperance where he truly flourished, earning the nickname “Al Dababa” (The Tank) from fans and scoring 51 goals in 86 appearances. He won three Tunisian league championships, three Tunisian Cups, the Arab Champions League, and the North African Cup of Champions with the club .

His performances in Tunisia earned him a move to Turkey, where he featured for top clubs including Besiktas, Sivasspor, Istanbul Basaksehir, Manisaspor, and Karabukspor . He later had stints in Algeria with USM Alger and in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq before retiring from professional football in 2018 .

At the international level, Eneramo chose to represent Nigeria despite reported attempts by Tunisia to convince him to switch allegiance. He made his Super Eagles debut against Jamaica in a friendly match in London on February 11, 2009 . He went on to earn 10 caps for Nigeria and scored three goals. One of his most memorable moments came on September 6, 2009, when he scored against Tunisia in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Abuja .

After retiring from active football, Eneramo reportedly remained connected to the sport, keeping fit through regular training sessions and recreational matches in Kaduna, where he was also said to be running a football academy . His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football family, with tributes pouring in from fans, former teammates, and officials across the country.
