Football World Mourns as Lionel Messi’s Father Jorge Passes Away at 68

Jorge Messi, the father and longtime agent of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.

He passed away on Friday night at a medical clinic in his native Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness. The news was confirmed on Saturday by Messi’s boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys.

In a poignant tribute, Newell’s Old Boys described Jorge as “the pillar and the person who supported with vision, rigor, and affection the career of the greatest player of all time alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini”.

The club added that his “constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory”.

The exact cause of his death has not been publicly disclosed, though reports confirm he had been battling health problems for several months.

During the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi was seen crying after scoring against Algeria, later explaining his emotions were “absolutely nothing to do with football” and that he had experienced “a few difficult days”.

The family subsequently confirmed Jorge was receiving medical treatment and asked for privacy.

Jorge Messi played an instrumental role in his son’s historic career, traveling with a 13-year-old Lionel to Barcelona for the trial that led to his rise at the Catalan club.

He managed Messi’s contracts and transfers throughout his career, including moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.

His illness prevented him from attending the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina finished as runners-up.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. CONMEBOL expressed its “deep regret” and offered condolences to Lionel and his family.

The Argentine Football Association also sent “the most heartfelt, warm and affectionate embrace” to the family.
