Tinubu Congratulates Modi On 25 Years In Government, Hails Nigeria-India Ties
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on marking 25 years since he first assumed public office as Head of Government and Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.
In a statement issued by the State House on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Tinubu described the milestone as a historic achievement and commended Modi’s continued service to the Indian people.
Modi served as Chief Minister of Gujarat for more than 12 years before becoming Prime Minister of India in 2014.
Tinubu said a quarter-century of uninterrupted leadership was a rare achievement in a democracy, describing it as a reflection of the confidence placed in Modi by the Indian people.
The Nigerian President also commended what he described as Modi’s focus on development, citing infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion and innovation as areas in which India has recorded significant progress under his leadership.
Tinubu said Nigeria valued its strategic partnership with India, recalling Modi’s historic State Visit to Abuja in November 2024, during which Nigeria honoured the Indian leader with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
According to the President, the visit provided fresh impetus to bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, energy, defence and security, health, education and technology.
Tinubu described Nigeria and India as fellow democracies and leading voices of the Global South, noting that both countries share a commitment to a more inclusive and representative international order.
He expressed confidence that the relationship between the two countries would continue to deepen under Modi’s leadership.
The President wished the Indian Prime Minister good health, continued strength and success in his service to the people of India.
