Dutch Police Shutdown a Nigerian Wedding Celebration Over Noise Complaints, Sparking Accusations of Racial Bias
Dutch police interrupted a Nigerian wedding celebration in the Netherlands over the weekend, ordering guests to leave the venue mid-ceremony following noise complaints from neighbours.
Video footage circulating online shows officers in high-visibility yellow vests entering a decorated hall while the event was underway, directing attendees out of the building. Guests dressed in traditional Nigerian attire, including gele headwraps and sequined gowns, were seen leaving the premises, with some appearing distressed and others protesting the interruption.
A voice heard in the background of the footage accused the officers of discriminatory treatment. “It is because we are blacks; you’re treating us like animals,” the voice said. Another attendee stated, “I still believe it’s because of our skin colour. This is not nice. This is intimidation. You can’t just spoil a party like that”.
A Nigerian woman who attended the event later claimed in a follow-up video that the action was not solely due to noise, alleging that a Moroccan party taking place upstairs in the same building was allowed to continue. She suggested the intervention was influenced by the fact that the wedding guests were Black.
Dutch municipalities enforce strict noise ordinances, particularly for loud music or celebrations after evening hours. Under Dutch rules, private parties often require permits with clear time limits, and hosts are expected to comply with local regulations.

Reactions online have been divided. Some commenters stressed the need for event hosts to respect local laws. “You cannot keep partying at night when people are sleeping. Allow the party in a place that allows you to be noisy without bothering others,” said one commenter identified as sultanhazard. Another, lord_plaga, wrote, “You are in a foreign country. Respect their laws and cultures. Don’t just make noise everywhere you go”.
Others questioned whether the police response was proportionate. One commenter, misboombastic, stated, “They could have told them to keep the noise down and perhaps ask when the party would be over? I do question if the police would have been called if they were white”.
As of reporting, Dutch police have not issued a public statement confirming the details of the intervention or addressing the specific claim of racial discrimination.
The exact location and whether the venue had obtained the necessary permits remain unconfirmed.
