Adamu Makes History as First Nigerian to Become CAF Secretary-General
Nigeria has secured a historic position in African football administration as Samson Adamu has been appointed Acting Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The appointment, confirmed on Sunday during a CAF Congress in Cairo, marks the first time a Nigerian will occupy the influential role since the organisation was established over 70 years ago.
Adamu replaces Véron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down from the position, triggering a leadership transition within the continent’s football governing body.
Before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organising major competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations and other inter-club tournaments across the continent.
His appointment was proposed by CAF’s Executive Committee and ratified by the Congress, underscoring confidence in his administrative experience and deep understanding of African football operations.
The Secretary-General position; often described as the “engine room” of CAF, is responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation, implementation of executive decisions, and coordination of football activities across Africa.
Adamu is expected to serve in an acting capacity until the next CAF General Assembly, where a substantive appointment may be made.
His emergence is widely seen as a major boost for Nigeria’s influence in continental football politics and administration.
