Nigeria’s opposition landscape is set for a major political moment as top figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi are expected to play key roles at the national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Abuja.

The convention is widely seen as a defining step in the party’s efforts to consolidate a broad opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reports, the ADC has constituted a high-profile convention planning committee chaired by former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke, with former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal serving as deputy chairman.

Other prominent political figures, including Nasir El-Rufai and Abubakar Malami, are also members of the committee, alongside several former governors and senior party stakeholders.

The convention is expected to ratify a new National Working Committee (NWC), with former Senate President David Mark tipped as National Chairman and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

Political observers say the gathering underscores growing alignment among opposition heavyweights, many of whom have recently gravitated toward the ADC as a platform to challenge the ruling government in 2027.

The convention also comes amid internal disputes and legal challenges over the party’s leadership structure, with court cases and tensions involving electoral authorities adding uncertainty ahead of the event.

Despite these challenges, the ADC leadership has urged members and stakeholders to support the process, describing the convention as a critical step toward strengthening internal democracy and building a credible alternative for Nigerians.
