An Army veteran in the United States has been charged with sharing classified information about a highly sensitive commando unit with a journalist, in a case authorities say endangered national security and allied forces.

The suspect, Courtney Williams, 40, from Wagram, North Carolina, is accused of violating federal laws and multiple nondisclosure agreements by disclosing details of her work with a special military unit based at Fort Bragg.

According to a statement by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Williams allegedly released sensitive information to a media outlet for publication, an act officials described as reckless and damaging.

“Anyone divulging information they vowed to protect to a reporter for publication is reckless, self-serving and damages our nation’s security,” said Reid Davis.

Another senior FBI official, Roman Rozhavsky, stated that Williams had sworn an oath to safeguard national secrets but instead “betrayed that oath,” putting U.S. military personnel and allies at risk.

Williams has been specifically charged under provisions of the Espionage Act. She appeared before a federal court in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the case against her was unsealed.

A magistrate judge ordered her to remain in custody under the supervision of the U.S. Marshals Service pending further hearings scheduled for next week.

Court documents have not yet identified her legal representation, and a family member declined to comment when contacted.
