China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has visited Pyongyang in a significant diplomatic move aimed at deepening relations between China and North Korea.

The visit, which took place from April 9 to 10, marks Wang’s first trip to Pyongyang since 2019 and signals renewed engagement between the two long-time allies after years of limited contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shifting geopolitical dynamics.

During his stay, Wang held high-level talks with North Korea’s Foreign Minister, Choe Son Hui. Both sides pledged to strengthen strategic communication, expand cooperation, and increase high-level exchanges, emphasizing their historic alliance often described as “forged in blood.”

China also reaffirmed its support for North Korea, with Wang praising Pyongyang’s progress despite what he described as external pressure from Western countries.

The visit comes amid renewed diplomatic momentum between the two nations. Recent engagements include North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attending events in Beijing and increased economic exchanges, with trade and transport links; such as flights and rail services gradually resuming.

Analysts say the trip is also strategically timed ahead of an anticipated meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting Beijing may be coordinating its regional diplomacy to strengthen its influence in broader global negotiations.

Overall, the visit underscores China’s intent to reassert its role as North Korea’s key ally while navigating evolving geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Russia, and the wider region.
