The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally assumed responsibility for investigating the attack and abduction of Dr. Pedro Obaseki in Benin City on December 28, 2025, treating the incident as terrorism-related. The move follows petitions submitted by Obaseki’s legal team.

In a statement by his lead counsel, Femi Falana, SAN, the DSS headquarters in Abuja took over the probe “in recognition of the nature, gravity and implications of the acts complained of.” Falana described the classification of the case as terrorism-related as “commendable.”

The petitions allege terrorism, conspiracy, assault, unlawful detention, and obstruction of justice connected to the December 28 events. Dr. Obaseki has reportedly cooperated fully with the DSS during the investigation in Benin City, under the supervision of the State Director.

Falana said that any concerns about the conduct, handling, or procedural integrity of the investigation have been documented and included in consolidated representations to the appropriate authorities.

The legal team has also filed civil proceedings in Nigerian courts, which Falana emphasized are “intended to complement, not prejudice, ongoing investigations by security agencies,” while seeking judicial remedies and institutional accountability.

Beyond Nigeria, petitions have been submitted to international and regional bodies, including the ECOWAS Court of Justice, the European Union human-rights mechanisms, and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and arbitrary detention, to ensure transparency and preservation of evidence.

Falana added that social media platforms have been placed on notice regarding the circulation of footage linked to Obaseki’s alleged abduction and dehumanization, urging responsible conduct and cooperation with lawful accountability processes.

Dr. Obaseki stressed that all actions taken are aimed at justice, the rule of law, and public accountability, rather than sensationalism or political motives, calling for support in ensuring that all perpetrators and collaborators are identified and held accountable.
