The head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission has called for calm and restraint as citizens of Benin await the official results of Sunday’s presidential election.

In a statement issued shortly after the conclusion of voting, the mission leader urged political actors, supporters, and the general public to remain peaceful and respect the democratic process. The appeal comes amid heightened tension and anticipation across the country as vote counting continues.

The ECOWAS observer team, deployed to monitor the credibility and transparency of the electoral process, commended the largely orderly conduct of the polls. However, it emphasized the need for all stakeholders to avoid actions that could undermine stability during the sensitive post-election period.

“Peace must prevail before, during, and after the announcement of results,” the mission head stated, stressing that any grievances should be addressed through legal and constitutional channels rather than violence.

Sunday’s vote is considered a significant test for Benin’s democracy, with voters turning out to choose their next president in what analysts describe as a closely watched contest. Security has been tightened in parts of the country to prevent unrest as citizens await the final tally.

Observers note that elections in the region often carry the risk of post-result disputes, making calls for calm from regional bodies like ECOWAS critical in maintaining order.

As the electoral commission continues its collation process, attention remains fixed on the eventual announcement, which will determine the country’s political direction in the coming years.
