FEDERAL HIGH COURT ORDERS NIGERIA POLICE TO SUSPEND ENFORCEMENT OF TINTED GLASS PERMIT
A Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, has directed the Nigeria Police Force and Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to suspend enforcement of the tinted glass permit required for vehicle owners, pending further proceedings in the matter. The court issued an interim order in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, filed by legal practitioner John Aikpokpo-Martins challenging the legality of the permit enforcement.
“The court asked the police and the IGP to maintain the status quo and ‘respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter’,” according to Senior Advocate Kunle Edun, SAN, who led the legal team for the petitioner. Edun described the directive as “a major step in ensuring that the rule of law is upheld while the substantive issues in the case are being determined.”

Prior to the court’s order, police commands in Lagos and Niger State had begun enforcing regulations requiring tinted glass permits for vehicles. In Lagos, Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi announced the enforcement was in line with directives from IGP Egbetokun, aiming “to boost public safety, curb crime, and ensure compliance with traffic laws.” Motorists were urged to obtain approved permits via (link unavailable)
Adebisi stated, “Vehicle owners who are yet to register are strongly advised to obtain the approved tinted glass permit at (link unavailable) Those who are not desirous of obtaining the tinted glass permit are advised to remove such tints or replace the factory-fitted glasses with transparent ones, as legally provided by the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act 2004.” Vehicles without permits risked being impounded, with offenders facing prosecution.
Lagos Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh warned officers to conduct enforcement professionally without harassment or extortion, saying offenders and negligent supervisors would face sanctions. “The command continues to enforce general traffic and safety regulations, motorists are advised to always carry their essential documents and to cooperate with officers during lawful stop-and-search operations,” Adebisi said.
The Niger State Police Command had also started implementing the tinted glass permit enforcement, reflecting broader efforts by police across Nigeria to regulate vehicle tinting amid security concerns.
