Humanitarian flotilla heads for Gaza as Israel warns of interception
A coalition of international activists and humanitarian groups has launched a new aid flotilla headed toward the Gaza Strip, aiming to break Israel’s longstanding naval blockade and deliver supplies directly to the enclave.
Organisers say the mission is carrying food, medical supplies, and other essential relief items for civilians in Gaza, where humanitarian conditions remain severe amid ongoing conflict and restricted access to aid corridors.
According to statements from participating groups, the flotilla is composed of multiple civilian vessels sailing from different Mediterranean departure points, with volunteers from several countries onboard. The organisers insist the mission is peaceful and compliant with international humanitarian law, describing it as a “symbolic and practical attempt” to open a humanitarian corridor by sea.
However, Israeli authorities have repeatedly maintained that the naval blockade on the Gaza Strip is a security measure aimed at preventing weapons smuggling to Hamas, and have in the past intercepted similar flotillas before they reached the territory.
Security analysts warn that any approach toward Gaza’s coastal waters could lead to a confrontation at sea, depending on how Israeli naval forces respond to the vessels’ advance.
The development comes amid growing international debate over humanitarian access to Gaza, with aid agencies calling for expanded and uninterrupted delivery routes through land, air, and sea to address worsening shortages.
