INEC Halts Voter Revalidation Nationwide, Shifts Exercise Beyond 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, pushing it until after the 2027 General Election.

The decision was taken at a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
According to INEC, the postponement followed deliberations on the timing and implications of conducting the exercise ahead of the next general elections.
The Commission described the voter revalidation exercise as a vital component of its mandate, aimed at maintaining a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. It explained that the process is intended to verify voter records, correct personal data, remove duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the integrity of the register.
INEC added that the exercise also allows registered voters to confirm and update their details where necessary.
While announcing the shift in schedule, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that the integrity of the electoral process remains a top priority.
No new date has been announced for the revalidation exercise, but INEC said it will be carried out after the conclusion of the 2027 general elections.
