INEC Receives ADC Petition Amid Growing Political Tensions
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling an escalation in the ongoing dispute between the opposition party and the electoral body.
The petition was submitted on Wednesday by the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, and received at INEC headquarters by National Commissioner Abdullahi Zuru.
The development follows a series of confrontations between the ADC and INEC, with the party repeatedly demanding the removal of the commission’s chairman, Joash Amupitan. The ADC accuses him of misinterpreting a Court of Appeal ruling that allegedly led to the suspension of the party’s recognition.
Earlier, prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi, staged a peaceful protest in Abuja. The demonstration, which began at Maitama Junction and proceeded to the INEC headquarters, drew significant political attention.
Also present were key political actors such as David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, and Dino Melaye.
Protesters carried placards bearing inscriptions like “Tinubu, let our democracy breathe,” “Falle daya ce, one-term president,” and “I stand with ADC, I stand with democracy,” reflecting growing dissatisfaction within sections of the opposition.
The ADC has consistently alleged that INEC is aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections an accusation yet to be formally addressed by the electoral body.
The latest petition marks another step in what appears to be a deepening political standoff that could shape the trajectory of Nigeria’s electoral landscape in the coming years.
