The Katsina State Government has finalised arrangements to host its first-ever mass wedding ceremony for no fewer than 1,000 couples across the state’s 34 local government areas.

The initiative, according to officials, is part of broader efforts to curb social vices and support vulnerable groups facing economic barriers to marriage.

Speaking on Thursday during a livelihood support and counselling training session, the Director-General of the Katsina State Hisbah Board, Malam Abu-Ammar, said the programme targets widows, orphans, and other disadvantaged individuals who are willing to marry but lack the financial means.

He explained that the selected beneficiaries—comprising 2,000 individuals—were drawn from all local government areas in the state.

“This mass wedding is designed to reduce social vices by addressing the challenges faced by widows, orphans, and other vulnerable persons who are unable to marry due to economic hardship,” he said.

Although the government has not disclosed the total cost of the programme, it assured that both brides and grooms will receive support packages. While the brides are expected to benefit from empowerment initiatives, the grooms will be provided with assistance to help them settle into family life.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, A’isha Malumfashi, revealed that all participating couples have undergone medical screening and verification to ensure their health status and compatibility.

Represented by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Aminatu Mashi, the commissioner said the exercise was necessary to guarantee the wellbeing of the couples ahead of the ceremony.

She further announced that the mass wedding is scheduled to hold on April 25, 2026.
