LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATES DISQUALIFIED AS INEC UPHOLDS SUPREME COURT RULING
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the names of all candidates submitted by Julius Abure for the nationwide Bye elections scheduled for August 16, 2025. This decision follows a Supreme Court judgment that upheld INEC’s disqualification of Abure’s nominees.

Former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Oparah, in a statement, commended INEC for its resolute action, saying, “The Labour Party leadership, now operating under recognized structures under the leadership of Sen. Usman Nenadi PhD, commends INEC for its resolute action in this regard.”

Oluchi Oparah stated that Abure’s continued attempts to present himself as the Labour Party’s National Chairman, despite the expiration of his tenure and the Supreme Court’s ruling, have caused unnecessary confusion within the party and among its supporters. “His actions risk jeopardizing the Labour Party’s prospects in future elections, potentially alienating voters and stakeholders who value transparency and accountability,” Oparah said.

The Labour Party is now focused on moving forward under legitimate leadership, with a commitment to rebuilding unity and preparing for the 2027 General Elections with credible, lawfully nominated candidates. Oparah urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to hold all actors in the electoral process accountable, ensuring that the democratic will of the people prevails.

The party reaffirms its trust in INEC and the judiciary as pillars of Nigeria’s democracy and is confident that, with the support of its members and the Nigerian people, the Labour Party will emerge stronger from this episode, ready to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future. Oluchi Oparah emphasized the need for a transparent and inclusive electoral process, saying, “Let us unite in our commitment to a transparent and inclusive electoral process, one that truly reflects the aspirations of all Nigerians.”
