The city of Lagos erupted in colour, rhythm, and cultural pride as thousands gathered for the 2026 Fanti Carnival, a vibrant celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage rooted in history and identity.

Held on Easter Monday at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square, the carnival drew locals, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts who filled the streets with elaborate costumes, music, and dance in what organisers described as one of Africa’s biggest Afro-Brazilian street festivals.

The annual event traces its origins to the 19th century, when formerly enslaved Africans; known as the Aguda returned from Brazil and settled in Lagos, bringing with them carnival traditions that have since evolved into a symbol of cultural fusion.

This year’s edition, themed “A Homecoming of Heritage,” showcased the deep historical ties between Nigeria and Brazil, blending Yoruba traditions with Brazilian and Portuguese influences through music, costumes, and performances.

Colourful processions from historic Lagos Island communities; including Lafiaji, Okepopo, Epetedo, and Campos, featured dazzling floats, horse displays, and high-energy performances that transformed the city into a living cultural stage.

Adding to the excitement, top Nigerian artists such as Teni, 9ice, and Niniola delivered electrifying performances, blending contemporary Afrobeats with traditional sounds.

Officials say the carnival is more than just entertainment. It plays a key role in boosting tourism, supporting local businesses, and preserving cultural heritage. The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism noted that such festivals stimulate commerce and empower small enterprises across participating communities.

Beyond the spectacle, the Fanti Carnival stands as a powerful reminder of a shared transatlantic history, celebrating resilience, identity, and the enduring cultural bridge between Africa and its diaspora.
