German Bundesliga side Union Berlin have made history after appointing Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach of their men’s team until the end of the season.

The decision follows the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, who was sacked after a disappointing run of results, including a 3–1 defeat to Heidenheim.

Eta’s appointment marks a groundbreaking moment in football, as she becomes the first female head coach in the history of the Bundesliga, and the first woman to lead a men’s team in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

The 34-year-old, who previously coached Union Berlin’s youth side and made history in 2023 as the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach, now steps into one of the most high-pressure roles in German football.

Union Berlin are currently battling to secure their top-flight status, with only a handful of matches remaining this season. Eta has been tasked with steering the club away from relegation danger and stabilising performances in the final stretch.

Speaking after her appointment, Eta expressed confidence in the squad and determination to deliver results, describing the opportunity as a major challenge and responsibility.

Her appointment is widely seen as a landmark moment for gender representation in football, potentially opening doors for more women to take up leadership roles in the men’s game.
