The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that recent military strikes occurred dangerously close to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, intensifying global concerns over nuclear safety amid escalating regional conflict.

According to the agency, analysis of satellite imagery revealed that at least one strike landed approximately 75 metres from the perimeter of the facility. Despite the proximity, the IAEA stated that the Bushehr plant itself was not damaged and continues to operate without disruption.

The confirmation follows earlier reports from Iranian authorities indicating that a projectile had landed near the site. The Bushehr facility remains Iran’s only operational nuclear power plant, making it a critical component of the country’s energy infrastructure.

However, the IAEA has issued a strong warning over the risks posed by continued military activity near nuclear installations. Director General Rafael Grossi cautioned that such strikes could trigger a “severe radiological accident” with potentially catastrophic consequences for human life, the environment, and neighbouring regions.

The development comes amid a broader escalation in hostilities involving Iran, Israel, and allied forces, with multiple strikes reported across strategic and energy infrastructure. Global bodies, including health and nuclear safety agencies, have urged restraint, warning that any damage to nuclear facilities could have long-term, cross-border impacts.

Iran has also raised concerns over repeated attacks near the site, warning that continued strikes increase the risk of radioactive leakage and regional disaster.

As tensions continue to rise, the IAEA reiterated its position that nuclear facilities must never be targeted under any circumstances, stressing the urgent need for de-escalation to prevent a potential nuclear incident.
