The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has announced the resumption of an indefinite nationwide strike beginning April 7, 2026, following what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to honour key agreements on doctors’ welfare.

The decision was reached at an emergency virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) held on April 4, where members deliberated on the recent reversal of the reviewed Professional Allowance Table (PAT) by the Federal Government.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, NARD expressed “grave concern and total disappointment” over the policy reversal, describing it as a breach of prior agreements and a move that could worsen already fragile working conditions in the health sector.

The association noted that the decision was ill-timed and unjustifiable, warning that it would negatively impact staff morale and the sustainability of healthcare delivery across the country. It also highlighted persistent delays in the payment of promotion and salary arrears owed to doctors in several institutions.

Further concerns were raised over the slow disbursement of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and the continued delay in paying 19 months’ outstanding arrears of the professional allowance, despite earlier assurances from the government.

As part of its resolutions, NARD rejected the reversal of the allowance and demanded its immediate reinstatement, alongside the settlement of all outstanding arrears and timely release of training funds.

Citing the government’s “continued failure” to meet its obligations, the association directed all its members nationwide to withdraw their services completely from midnight on April 7 until its demands are met.

The statement, signed by NARD President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman and Secretary-General Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, urged members to remain united and resolute while leadership at all levels engages in advocacy and lawful actions to press home their demands.

The development raises fresh concerns over potential disruptions to healthcare services nationwide, as patients may face limited access to medical care if the strike persists.
