Newcastle Beat Tottenham 2-0 as Jaissle’s Magpies Continue Impressive Start

Newcastle United produced another impressive performance under new manager Matthias Jaissle, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 away from home on Saturday to secure their first Premier League victory of the season.

After opening their league campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Liverpool, Newcastle delivered another strong display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scoring in the second half.

Tottenham controlled much of the first half and created several promising opportunities, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček produced important saves to keep the hosts at bay. The Magpies also defended resolutely as Spurs struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut goals.

Newcastle finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Amar Dedić headed the ball down for Elanga, who turned away from his marker before firing a low effort that went in off the far post to give the visitors a deserved lead.

The visitors doubled their advantage just 11 minutes later.

From a corner, Nick Woltemade headed the ball down at the far post and Yoane Wissa reacted brilliantly, getting low to flick the ball into the net and make it 2-0.

Tottenham attempted to respond, but their attacking play became increasingly predictable, with Newcastle comfortably dealing with a succession of crosses into the box.

The defeat leaves Tottenham without a point from their opening two Premier League matches. Spurs began the season with a 3-0 defeat to Brentford and have now suffered another setback at home under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

For Jaissle, meanwhile, the result represents a major step forward. Newcastle’s new boss has now overseen a draw against Liverpool and a convincing away victory against Tottenham in his first two league games, suggesting the Magpies could be developing a strong identity under the German coach.

Newcastle also remain unbeaten in their last five Premier League meetings with Tottenham and have won their last two visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
