At least nine soldiers and one policeman have been killed in a deadly ambush by armed gunmen in the Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Governor Nasir Idris confirmed on Wednesday.

The attack reportedly occurred Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community when security operatives were targeted by assailants believed to have been operating in the area for some time.

The gunmen were reportedly traced to a construction company yard, prompting a military response that ended in an ambush along the way.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with two military trucks set ablaze during the assault. Initial reports also indicated the deaths of two civilians, though authorities are yet to confirm the full toll.

Governor Idris, who visited the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, described the attack as “barbaric” and assured that the state government would cover medical expenses for the injured and support the families of the fallen security personnel.

“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect citizens,” he said.

The governor later visited the attack site to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and prayed for the souls of the deceased, reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening security in the state.

Northern Nigeria has experienced persistent attacks by bandits and insurgent groups, with multiple incidents resulting in fatalities among troops.

Notably, in June 2025, 17 soldiers were killed in Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State, during a gun battle with suspected bandits. Insurgent attacks have also continued in the North-East, particularly in Borno State.
The military authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the latest ambush.
