The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, just two days after celebrating his milestone birthday. According to reports, the revered monarch died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025.

Born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja village near Akanran in Ibadan North East Local Government Area of Oyo State, Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne on July 12, 2024, following the death of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun. He served as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland for nearly a year.

Oba Olakulehin had a distinguished military career, serving in the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers from 1970 to 1979 and rising to the rank of Major. After his military service, he transitioned into business and politics, founding several companies, including FAKOL Nigeria Ltd and Olakunlehin Press. In 1992, he was elected to the House of Representatives, representing Ibadan South East Constituency.

The monarch’s death has been confirmed by the Chief Press Secretary to the late Olubadan, Prince Solomon Ayoade, who stated, “Yes, it’s true that Baba has joined his ancestors.” Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has also been informed of the monarch’s demise and pledged the state’s support for the family during this period.

Makinde said, “I commiserate with the family and all of us. The government will definitely stay with the family and play whatever roles we are supposed to play, including giving Kabiyesi a befitting burial.” The governor also prayed for strength for the family, noting that today marks the 13th year since his father passed away.

With Oba Olakulehin’s passing, the next in line to the throne is expected to be Senator Rasheed Ladoja, a former Governor of Oyo State and the most senior member of the Olubadan-in-Council from the Balogun line. Royal drummers have already relocated to Ladoja’s house, heralding his ascension to the throne.
