OKPE UNION CELEBRATES 95TH ANNIVERSARY, CALLS FOR RECOGNITION OF OKPE AS DISTINCT ETHNIC NATIONALITY

The Okpe Union marked its 95th anniversary in Lagos, with President General, Prof. O. Igho Natufe, calling for the recognition of Okpe as a distinct ethnic nationality. Prof. Natufe made the call in a statement at the anniversary celebration, held at the Okpe Union House in Obalende, Lagos.

Prof. Natufe said the Okpe Union would continue to advocate for the recognition of Okpe identity, despite internal and external hostile forces. “To put it bluntly, this position is a betrayal of Okpe Identity, and a betrayal of the Okpe Nation,” Natufe said, referencing the current monarch’s stance on Okpe’s ethnic classification.

The Okpe Union leader highlighted the organization’s achievements between 2021 and 2025, including promoting a positive profile of the Okpe ethnic nationality, reestablishing the autonomy of the Okpe Union through landmark court judgments, and contributing to the success of Okpe Cultural Day events.

Natufe also emphasized the need for the teaching of Okpe Language in educational institutions and its use in places of worship. “The teaching of Okpe Language in all primary and post-primary educational institutions in Okpe Nation, including privately owned schools, shall be pursued vigorously,” he stated.

The Okpe Union President General called for a better structure for Nigerian federalism, supporting calls for state police to address security issues. He also urged the National Assembly to work with the Independent Electoral Commission to ensure timely review of electoral laws and regulations.

Natufe’s concerns extend beyond Okpe Nation, as he advocates for good governance and improved wellbeing of Nigerians. “It is with good governance which in turn translates to the improved wellbeing of the people that increases the confidence the people would have in the democratic process,” he said.

The Okpe Union leader concluded by reaffirming the organization’s commitment to fostering collaboration and cooperation within the Okpe Nation. “With an open mind, the Newly Sworn National Executive Council which I am once again privileged to head for the next four years promises to foster collaboration and cooperation in the Okpe Nation,” Natufe said.
