The Oyo State Government has announced that local flight operations will resume at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, by the end of 2025, with full international operations scheduled to begin in 2026. The airport is currently undergoing a major upgrade to meet international aviation standards.

According to the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, the airport’s transformation includes the extension of the runway from 2,400 to 3,000 meters and its widening from 45 to 60 meters to accommodate wide-body aircraft suitable for international flights. The airfield lighting has also been upgraded to CAT C standards, while fire and safety systems have been enhanced to meet global benchmarks.

“These upgrades reflect the government’s vision of transforming Ibadan Airport into a modern, internationally competitive facility,” Oyelade said. “By enhancing our infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft, we are improving domestic connectivity and opening doors to global travel.”

The commissioner confirmed that the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads are already 55% complete and are expected to be ready before the year ends, pending regulatory approvals for domestic operations. “The International Terminal is currently at 15% completion and is projected to be ready by June 2026,” Oyelade added.

The upgrade project, officially flagged off on September 18, 2024, led to a temporary shutdown of the airport in March 2025 to allow for accelerated construction work. Governor Seyi Makinde has reiterated his commitment that the next Hajj flight from Oyo State to Saudi Arabia will depart directly from the Ibadan airport.

The resumption of flight operations at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport is expected to boost the state’s economy and improve connectivity for residents and visitors alike. With the government’s commitment to completing the upgrade project, the airport is set to become a major hub for air travel in the region.
