PATRIOTS CONVENE NATIONAL CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS NIGERIA’S CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS

A group of eminent Nigerians under the umbrella of The Patriots, led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, is set to convene an emergency National Constitutional Summit to address the country’s constitutional crisis. The summit, scheduled to hold between July 15 and 17, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, will bring together 700 delegates from 36 states and the diaspora to discuss the future of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

Prof Anthony Kila, Spokesperson of the Summit Joint Secretariat, in a statement, said the summit aims to enrich the ongoing constitution reform process of the National Assembly. Kila explained that the summit will feature keynote speakers, lead discussants, and panel sessions on crucial constitutional topics. “The three-day National Confab on the future of Nigeria shall also be expected to x-ray ten crucial constitutional topics under the broad theme; Actualising A Constitutional Democracy that works for all in Nigeria,” he said.

Kila further disclosed that the summit will be attended by former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as key traditional and religious leaders from the six geopolitical zones. Other notable attendees include Prof Wole Soyinka, General TY Danjuma, and Mallam Tanko Yakassai. The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, will also address the summit on security concerns in the country.

The summit will produce a stakeholders’ legislative bill that will be sent to the National Assembly for constitution reform. After the summit, the leadership will visit President Bola Tinubu to formally submit the summit report to the presidency, accompanied by the leadership of the National Assembly, for the buy-in and support of the federal government. Kila emphasized that the summit will provide a platform for Nigerians to build consensus on the system and structure of constitutional democracy most suitable for the country.
