Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte Announces Presidential Run
Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday formally announced her intention to contest the 2028 presidential election, taking aim at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. over what she described as deep-rooted corruption and worsening national challenges.
Duterte, whose father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, is currently detained in The Hague over allegations linked to killings during his administration, is widely viewed by political observers as a leading contender in the next presidential race.
Surveys have consistently placed her among the top prospective candidates.
Speaking at a press briefing, Duterte said her political journey had led her to realize that her role in public service was larger than personal ambition.
She criticized the current administration over rising living costs, weaknesses in the healthcare system, and what she called persistent corruption within government institutions.
She also expressed regret for backing Marcos in the 2022 elections when she ran alongside him as vice president.
Their alliance was instrumental in securing Marcos’ victory and marked the political resurgence of the Marcos family decades after the fall of former strongman Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
Rather than directly apologizing to voters, Duterte said she was prepared to dedicate her future to serving the nation. Notably, she delivered her remarks from a podium that did not carry the official insignia of her office.
In response, presidential palace press officer Claire Castro said Marcos extended his well wishes to the vice president but rejected her criticisms of the administration.
Under the Philippine Constitution, the president is restricted to a single six-year term, meaning Marcos is barred from seeking reelection in 2028.
Analysts suggest that a Duterte presidency could once again alter Manila’s foreign policy direction.
During Rodrigo Duterte’s tenure from 2016 to 2022, the Philippines shifted closer to Beijing and distanced itself from Washington.
Since taking office, Marcos has strengthened ties with the United States and adopted a firmer stance against China in disputes over the South China Sea.
A Sara Duterte victory, experts say, could potentially redirect the country’s diplomatic alignment.
