The Coalition of United Political Parties has condemned in the strongest terms the Senate’s handling of the screening of ambassadorial nominees and other presidential appointments including Reno Omokri, Femi Fani Kayode, and former INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu. The group denounced the “bow and go” practice as a disgrace to national interest.

CUPP National Secretary Peter Ameh, in a statement, said, “The ‘bow and go’ treatment given to these nominees is a glaring display of the Senate’s lack of commitment to diligently address issues of national interest and security.” Ameh stated that the approach reveals a troubling spinelessness in pursuing due diligence and accountability to the Nigerian people, arguing that the Senate prioritizes the President’s interests over national security and international standing.

Ameh emphasized that this pattern of political expediency over national good is unsurprising but alarming. He called on Nigerians to demand higher standards of scrutiny and accountability from their elected representatives.

The CUPP urged the Senate to revisit its processes to ensure thorough evaluations that prioritize Nigeria’s security and interests. Ameh reiterated that the current approach dashes the nation’s shame and compromises its future.
