South-East Former Governors Rally for Unity, Praise Tinubu’s ‘Infrastructure Revolution’
Former governors from the South-eastern part of Nigeria have formally launched a new political platform, the South-East Former Governors Forum, in a move aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and supporting governance, while also commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing infrastructure development across the country.
The forum was inaugurated on April 7, 2026, in Enugu, bringing together past governors from across party lines. Speaking on behalf of the group, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the body was established to provide advisory support to serving governors in the South-East and contribute to national development.
According to him, the forum is open to all former governors of the region regardless of political affiliation, with the goal of fostering unity and offering strategic guidance on key regional and national issues. He noted that although not all members were present at the inaugural meeting due to prior engagements and medical trips, the forum expects broader participation in subsequent gatherings.
Umahi explained that the initiative is designed to work closely with incumbent governors, complementing their efforts in addressing developmental challenges and promoting cooperation across the South-East. He added that the group would engage directly with current state leaders to identify areas where its experience can support policy direction and implementation.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the former governors praised President Tinubu for what they described as an “infrastructure revolution” in the region, highlighting ongoing federal projects and increased government attention to the South-East. They also commended the President for appointing individuals from the region into key national positions, describing the move as inclusive and strategic.
The forum further acknowledged the performance of serving South-East governors, citing improvements in infrastructure, security, and empowerment initiatives, which they said have been strengthened by federal support.
In a significant political signal ahead of the 2027 general elections, the group also expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election bid, aligning with the position of current governors in the region and describing the move as necessary for continuity and sustained development.
Dignitaries present at the inaugural meeting included former governors such as Sullivan Chime, Martin Elechi, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Chris Ngige, among others, as the forum begins what it describes as a long-term effort to deepen collaboration and drive development in the South-East.
