The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has called on Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, to reconsider the one-year suspension imposed on civil servants found absent from duty during a recent unscheduled inspection.

The appeal comes amid growing debate over the balance between enforcing discipline and showing compassion within the state’s public service.

In a statement issued by the Anambra State chapter of the CLO, signed by its Chairman, Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, and Secretary, Comrade Chidi Mbah, the group commended the governor’s efforts to instil accountability and curb absenteeism in the civil service.

However, it described the severity of the proposed punishment as excessive, warning that such a lengthy suspension could severely impact the livelihoods of affected workers.

While acknowledging that absenteeism is a serious offence, the organisation urged the governor to adopt a more measured approach by reducing the suspension period to two months.

According to the group, such a revision would still serve as a deterrent while reflecting humane leadership.

“The governor’s action has sent a strong message about diligence and patriotism, but leadership also requires empathy,” the statement noted.

The CLO further advised the state government to complement disciplinary measures with incentives for punctual and dedicated workers, arguing that recognition and rewards could significantly improve overall performance in the civil service.

Reaffirming its support for ongoing reforms in Anambra State, the organisation expressed hope that the administration would strike a balance between accountability and compassion in handling the matter.
