Tinubu Donates Salaries to Armed Forces Welfare Fund
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special welfare fund aimed at supporting members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, including personnel wounded in active service and families of fallen soldiers.
The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, as part of activities marking the President’s 74th birthday.
According to the statement, the initiative is designed to honour the courage, sacrifice and dedication of military personnel who continue to safeguard the nation’s peace and security.
President Tinubu has directed the Accountant General of the Federation to create a dedicated account for the fund. The initiative will provide targeted assistance to injured service members, as well as widows, widowers and children of military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
In a personal show of commitment, the President pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office as seed funding for the welfare scheme, underscoring his determination to ensure that the sacrifices of service members are not overlooked.
He also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector stakeholders, as well as friends and well wishers, to contribute to the fund. He noted that further details on the operation of the fund would be made public in due course.
The President stressed that the initiative is anchored on a national responsibility to care for those who risk their lives in service to the country, as well as their families, regardless of existing insurance provisions.
He added that supporting the Armed Forces is not an act of charity but a collective duty, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel and ensuring their service is met with dignity, care and sustained support.
