Tragedy in Kano as Mother of Quintuplets Dies Hours After Delivery
Tragedy has struck in Kano following the death of a woman, Hafsat Yusuf, just hours after she delivered quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
Hafsat Yusuf gave birth to three boys and two girls via Caesarean section at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday. However, her husband, Salisu Nafiu, confirmed that she died in the early hours of Thursday, around 1 a.m., at the same hospital.
“She delivered the babies successfully in the afternoon, but we lost her in the early hours of today. It is a painful loss for our family,” Nafiu said.
Despite the mother’s death, all five newborns are alive and currently under close medical supervision. According to the father, the babies are stable and receiving adequate care from healthcare professionals.
Hospital sources also confirmed that the quintuplets are being given specialised attention to ensure their survival and healthy development.
The birth was particularly significant for the family, as it marked Hafsat’s ninth delivery. Her husband, a tricycle rider, described the development as both remarkable and emotionally overwhelming.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Ministry of Health had earlier announced that the state government would take full responsibility for the medical care of the quintuplets.
The ministry said the intervention underscores broader efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare and reduce mortality rates across the state.
The incident has drawn widespread sympathy from residents, many of whom described the situation as a mix of joy and sorrow for the bereaved family.
